Monday Medley - Colours of Durga Puja in Kolkata!

Monday Medley - A potpourri of interesting experiences, articles, posts from fellow bloggers which we liked, books we loved, interesting images of fellow travellers or images from our own portfolio. Published on Sundays. We hope it will be a good start to the week ahead......

The festive season in India is paused. Only before we get going again very soon. The season of festivals which starts with onset of monsoon goes on till Diwali and pause for few days. This is followed by the wedding season when festivities return in full vigour!

If you haven't been to Kolkata during Durga Puja, you have missed something. Kolkata is vibrant and colourful during one week of festivities. Goddess Durga is welcomed into everyone's home and worshipped. Huge pandals ( pre-fabricated structures) are erected at public places to display the goddess. Each pandal has its own theme. Over the years, they have become interesting with amazing diversity. You have all kind of themes - Tribal, Rural, Modern etc.. These pandals are a piece of art in themselves. Not only do you see the artistic creativity in decorating these pandals suiting the theme, but also the elegant sculptures of Goddess Durga. We were there few years back and it was a life time experience.

Good friend and colleague Sabyasachi Sen Sarma went around Kolkata during this year's Durga Puja and has come out with a magnificent album on the colourful pandals and festivities. You should see them to believe what we said previously. The variety is amazing and colours mind-blowing. Here are are few samples from his album.
