Back of the Blog - Pondicherry French Architecture

Pondicherry is a regular haunt for us having been there many times.

Many visitors to Pondy spend time visiting regular sightseeing places like The Marina, Aurobindo Ashram, Auroville or Matri Mandir. For us, the beauty of the town lies in the French architecture of its buildings on the other side of the canal in what is known as French quarters.

The pleasing colours of Orange and Yellow on the walls, large french windows, tall gates personify the glory of yesteryear. Walking around the French quarters early in the morning before the town wakes up is a pleasure. The best way to do it is to get up early to experience the sunrise on the marina and then walk along the streets with French names to feel the French ambience all around.

Better still - join the guided heritage walk organised by Pondy branch of INTACH which is doing pioneering work in the city in restoring the heritage structures. The tour takes an hour and a half and worth every minute. I am not sure how long will these buildings remain as many of them are being bought over, demolished and new ones built.

Top it up with a excellent breakfast at Rendezvous on Rue Suffren street. You can also stay in one of many restored heritage Pondicherry Hotels while on your next trip to the city.
